Generative AI Policy
Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Writing Process
To maintain transparency and research integrity, Media Konservasi requires authors to declare any use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) or AI-assisted tools in preparing their manuscript.
An AI Writing Statement is required in every submission1 General principles
AI is never an authorGenerative AI tools (e.g., large language models, AI paraphrasers, image generators, coding assistants) must not be listed as authors. Only humans who meet the authorship criteria may be credited.
Authors are fully responsiblefor all content of the manuscript, including any text, figures, code, or analyses produced or assisted by AI tools.
Permitted, used responsibly
- Language editing, grammar correction, or style improvement
- Formatting assistance
- Generating code snippets that the authors then check and validate
Not permitted
- Formulating the main scientific conclusions
- Interpreting results in place of the authors' own reasoning
- Performing peer review on behalf of another person
2 Mandatory disclosure
Every submitted manuscript must include a statement on the use, or non-use, of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies. Place it in a dedicated subsection titled “AI Writing Statement”:

Author Contributions
If AI tools were used State tool & purpose
During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used NAME OF TOOL, VERSION for brief description, e.g., language editing and grammar checking. After using this tool, the authors carefully reviewed, verified, and edited all generated or modified content and accept full responsibility for the integrity and accuracy of the manuscript.
Replace the highlighted parts to reflect your actual use. The statement must name which tool was used, for what purpose, and confirm that the authors checked and approved all content.
If AI tools were not used Still required
The authors confirm that no generative AI or AI-assisted tools were used in the writing or preparation of this manuscript.
3 AI for data, images, and code
Images, maps & figuresIf AI generates or substantially transforms images, maps, diagrams, or figures (including remote-sensing visualizations and environmental maps), describe this clearly in the Materials and Methods and/or the figure captions.
Code & scriptsIf AI helps write code (e.g., for spatial analysis, modelling, or statistics), authors must:
- validate the code and its outputs;
- clearly describe the methods used;
- take full responsibility for any errors or biases.
Synthetic dataAI-generated data not based on real observations must be explicitly identified as such and clearly separated from empirical data.
4 Ethics and integrity
No fabrication. AI must not be used to fabricate data, references, citations, or images. Doing so constitutes scientific misconduct.
No plagiarismMake sure AI-generated text does not introduce plagiarism, including paraphrased plagiarism, and that all ideas and wording from other sources are properly cited.
Undisclosed useIf the Editorial Team suspects undisclosed or inappropriate AI use, Media Konservasi may request clarification, original data, or earlier drafts, and may follow standard procedures for suspected misconduct.
5 AI use by editors and reviewers
Reviewers must not
- Upload or share submitted manuscripts, or any part of them, with public AI tools or external services that store or reuse the content.
Editors & reviewers may
- Using AI privately, e.g., for language support or to structure one's own comments. Editors and reviewers remain fully responsible for confidentiality and for the content of their evaluations.
