Abstract

This community service program was carried out in Kwasen Village, Kesesi Sub-district, Pekalongan Regency, with the aim of reducing farmers’ dependence on chemical pesticides. The activity introduced biological control of irrigated rice pests, particularly brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens), using yellow traps. The program was held on July 8, 2025, at the Rice Mill in Kalisat Hamlet, owned by a local village official. The implementation consisted of a socialization on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) through biological approaches, as well as hands-on practice in making yellow traps and applying them with farmer group representatives and participants. The socialization covered biological pest control techniques such as the introduction of refuge plants, eco-friendly traps, and the jajar legowo rice planting system. The yellow trap demonstration included preparation of tools and materials, the making process, and field application. The results showed that yellow traps can serve as an environmentally friendly alternative for pest control, although they have not yet proven fully effective against the brown planthopper. However, the traps were able to control several other pests, like rice bug (Leptocorisa spp.) and fruit flies. This training also enhanced farmers’ awareness of the importance of integrated pest management and supported the transition toward sustainable agriculture in Kwasen Village.
