We fully comply with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines. JAVA maintains a strict peer-review process supported by clear ethical standards to ensure the publication of high-quality scientific research. When ethical concerns are identified, we are committed to investigating thoroughly and taking appropriate measures to preserve the integrity of the scholarly record and protect research participants.

All submitted manuscripts must follow JAVA’s editorial and ethical policies as outlined on this webpage and in the Instructions for Authors. Submissions must also adhere to the specific requirements of each journal.

Core Principles:

  • Prevention — early identification of potential ethical issues through both automated tools and manual checks during peer review and manuscript evaluation.
  • Neutrality — fair and objective handling of cases, with corrections made to the literature when necessary.
  • Transparency — keeping relevant parties informed when appropriate and allowing sufficient time for responses.
  • Consistency — applying standardized procedures in investigations, ensuring that COPE principles and flowcharts are followed.
  • Authors, editors, and reviewers are expected to understand and comply with best practices in publication ethics.

Authors must uphold ethical standards in areas such as authorship (avoiding ghost or guest authorship), dual submission, proper attribution, plagiarism, image integrity, figure preparation, and disclosure of competing interests. They must also comply with JAVA’s research ethics policies, including those related to human subjects, animal research, fisheries and marine studies, and global research within the journal’s scope. Reviewers and editors are required to evaluate manuscripts fairly and confidentially, while declaring any competing interests. Editors must also follow the code of conduct for editorial board members.
