Authorship and the Use of AI, Image, or AI-Assisted Technologies AI or AI-Assisted Technologies

JAVA complies with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) position statement regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in manuscript preparation. Tools such as ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) do not fulfill the criteria for authorship and therefore cannot be listed as authors.

Authors are required to provide transparent disclosure of any use of AI tools or AI-assisted technologies during manuscript preparation. This disclosure must be submitted through the JAVA document template and should specify the exact application of the tools within relevant sections of the manuscript (e.g., Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion). Authors must also identify the specific AI tools employed (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Grammarly, DeepL, or QuillBot). To ensure compliance with JAVA’s ethical and transparency standards, a detailed statement of AI usage must be included in the supplementary file under the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Declaration section.

Journal of Vocational in Aquaculture (JAVA) upholds the highest standards of ethical publishing, in accordance with COPE guidelines. With the growing use of AI tools in academic writing, authors are expected to maintain transparency, accountability, and integrity when incorporating AI-generated content.

1. AI Transparency and Responsible Use

Authors are required to clearly disclose any AI-assisted tools used during manuscript preparation. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Language refinement (e.g., Grammarly, DeepL, QuillBot)
  • Text summarization or paraphrasing (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot)
  • Data processing and analysis (e.g., AI-based statistical software)
  • Reference management (e.g., AI-assisted citation tools)

AI tools must not be employed to generate original scientific ideas, draw conclusions, or fabricate data. Authors remain fully responsible for verifying the accuracy, originality, and ethical compliance of any AI-assisted content included in their work.

2. AI Declaration Requirement

Authors are required to include one of the following declarations within their manuscript:

If AI Tools Were Used:

The author(s) acknowledge utilizing [NAME OF AI TOOL/SERVICE, e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Grammarly] for [SPECIFIC PURPOSE, e.g., language editing, summarization, or data analysis] during the preparation of this manuscript. All AI-assisted content has been carefully reviewed, revised, and validated to ensure accuracy and originality. The final responsibility for the manuscript rests entirely with the author(s). For transparency and to support the review process, a detailed description of the tool’s application is provided in the relevant section of the manuscript (e.g., Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion), in accordance with the publisher’s ethical guidelines.

 

If No AI Tools Were Used:

The author(s) confirm that no artificial intelligence (AI) tools, services, or technologies were utilized in the drafting, editing, or refinement of this manuscript. All content is solely the product of the authors’ independent intellectual work, ensuring its originality and integrity.

3. Ethical Responsibilities of Authors

In line with Elsevier and Web of Science (WoS) policies, authors are expected to adhere to the following ethical requirements:

  • AI cannot be credited as an author – All intellectual contributions must originate from human effort.
  • AI-assisted content must be reviewed and verified – Any text generated with AI must be critically checked and factually validated by the authors.
  • No AI-generated data, citations, or conclusions – Manuscripts must be based solely on authentic, verifiable scientific work.
  • Avoid plagiarism through AI tools – AI must not be used to fabricate, manipulate, or unethically repurpose existing research.

Authors bear full responsibility for any misrepresentation, factual errors, or ethical violations that may arise from the use of AI in manuscript preparation.

4. Editorial and Peer Review Considerations

The editorial board of JAVA reserves the authority to:

  • Request additional clarification from authors regarding the use of AI.
  • Reject manuscripts that do not transparently disclose AI involvement.
  • Employ AI-assisted plagiarism detection tools to ensure originality and adherence to ethical standards.

Non-compliance with these policies may result in rejection of the manuscript or an ethical review conducted by the editorial board.
