AI Tools Usage Policy
Introduction
Jurnal Teknologi Perikanan dan Kelautan (JTPK) acknowledges the increasing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in scholarly publishing. AI technologies can assist authors in enhancing language quality, supporting data processing, and streamlining various aspects of manuscript preparation. While these tools offer significant benefits, their application must be carefully regulated to maintain academic integrity, originality, transparency, and accountability.
This policy defines the journal’s stance on the appropriate and ethical use of AI tools in manuscript development. It is intended to provide clear guidance, minimize misuse, and align with the principles outlined by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), including its Core Practices and guidance on AI in scholarly decision-making.
Definition of AI Tools
For the purpose of this policy, AI tools refer to digital applications or systems that utilize artificial intelligence methods—such as machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and deep learning—to generate, process, translate, summarize, or modify various forms of data (textual, numerical, visual, or audio) within a research context.
Examples include, but are not limited to:
- Generative AI platforms (e.g., large language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude)
- Writing enhancement tools (e.g., Grammarly, DeepL Write, Quillbot)
- AI-assisted data analysis and visualization software
- Tools for generating figures, images, or statistical outputs
- AI-supported literature search and citation management systems
Acceptable Use of AI Tools
a. Permissible Uses
Authors may use AI tools for limited and supportive purposes, including:
- Checking grammar, spelling, and punctuation
- Improving clarity, readability, and writing style
- Assisting with formatting references and citations
- Conducting preliminary literature exploration
- Supporting data analysis or modeling, provided results are verified
- Producing simple visual elements, subject to proper review and ethical use
b. Restricted Uses
AI tools must not be used to:
- Produce complete manuscripts or significant portions of original content without proper intellectual input and review
- Fabricate, manipulate, or misrepresent data, images, or research findings
- Perform translations without human verification
- Summarize or paraphrase existing works in ways that constitute plagiarism
- Generate content that violates copyright or reproduces third-party material without permission
Responsibilities of Authors
Authors are fully accountable for all submitted content, including any material generated or modified using AI tools. Authors are expected to:
- Ensure accuracy, originality, and reliability of all content
- Review and validate all AI-generated outputs
- Avoid plagiarism, bias, factual inaccuracies, and misleading information
- Properly attribute any external sources or materials suggested by AI
- Take full responsibility for any errors or ethical issues arising from AI-assisted work
- Critically revise all AI-assisted content to meet academic standards
Authorship and AI
AI tools cannot be recognized as authors or co-authors. Authorship is restricted to individuals who have made substantial intellectual contributions to the research and are accountable for its content.
Listing AI tools as authors, contributors, or within author contribution statements is strictly prohibited and may result in manuscript rejection or retraction.
Disclosure Requirements
Authors must clearly disclose the use of AI tools when their use goes beyond basic language editing. The disclosure should include:
- The name, version, and provider of the AI tool
- The purpose and extent of its use
- A statement confirming that the authors have reviewed and take responsibility for the AI-assisted content
Location of Disclosure in Manuscripts
Disclosure of AI usage should be placed appropriately within the manuscript, depending on its role:
a. Methods Section
If AI tools were used in data analysis, coding, figure generation, or other methodological components.
b. Acknowledgments Section
If AI tools were used for language editing, translation, or formatting assistance.
c. Dedicated Statement Section
Authors are encouraged to include a specific section titled “Declaration of AI Tool Usage”, for example:
"During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used [AI tool name (including version and provider)] to assist with [describe purpose and extent]. All outputs generated by the tool were carefully reviewed and revised by the authors to ensure accuracy, clarity, and compliance with academic standards. The authors take full responsibility for the content of this manuscript."
Editorial and Peer Review Oversight
Editors and reviewers will consider AI usage disclosures as part of the ethical evaluation process. If undisclosed or inappropriate use of AI is suspected, the editorial office may:
- Request clarification or revisions from the authors
- Reject the manuscript
- Escalate the case for further ethical review if necessary
JTPK does not rely solely on automated detection tools; all assessments involve human judgment and communication with authors.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
Failure to adhere to this policy may result in:
- Rejection of the manuscript at any stage
- Retraction of published articles
- Notification of the author’s institution in cases of suspected misconduct
- Restrictions on future submissions in cases of serious or repeated violations
Appeals and Dispute Resolution
Authors who disagree with editorial decisions related to AI usage may submit a formal appeal to the Editor-in-Chief. The appeal must clearly outline the issue, provide supporting evidence, and refer to this policy.
Appeals will be reviewed internally or, if necessary, in consultation with independent experts in accordance with Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidance.
Use of AI by the Editorial Team
JTPK does not use AI tools to make independent editorial or peer review decisions. Any use of AI by the editorial team will remain limited, transparent, and subject to human oversight.
Policy Updates and Author Guidance
This policy will be periodically reviewed and updated to reflect advancements in AI technologies and evolving publication standards. Authors are encouraged to consult this policy prior to submission and to contact the editorial office if clarification is needed.
JTPK supports responsible innovation while maintaining a strong commitment to ethical research and publication practices.
Ethical Framework and References
This policy is informed by ethical standards and recommendations from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), including:
- COPE Core Practices
- COPE Discussion Documents on Artificial Intelligence in Decision Making
- COPE Guidelines on Authorship and Contributorship
- COPE Retraction Guidelines
Compliance with these principles is required for all submissions to JTPK.
