Abstract

Gastrointestinal parasites remain one of the primary causes of economic losses in the livestock sector across countries, while increasing resistance to synthetic antiparasitic drugs has driven the exploration of plant-based bio-anthelmintic agents. This study aims to evaluate the extraction yield, tannin content, and the in vitro anthelmintic activity of Gynura procumbens leaf extract against Haemonchus contortus. The research was conducted in two stages, namely plant material extraction and anthelmintic activity testing. The first stage employed a completely randomized design (CRD) with two treatments, consisting of extraction from dried leaves and fresh leaves, each with three replications. The second stage also used a completely randomized design (CRD), with treatments consisting of a negative control (0.9% NaCl) and Gynura procumbens leaf extracts at 5%, 10%, and 15%, each with five replications. The results showed that dried leaf extraction produced a higher yield (19.93%) compared to fresh leaves (13.64%). The tannin content in dried leaves (1.97%) was also higher than in fresh leaves (0.68%) (p<0.01). Gynura procumbens leaf extract demonstrated significant anthelmintic activity (p<0.01), with 100% mortality at a concentration of 15%. It was concluded that the dried-leaf Gynura procumbens extract has potential as a natural anthelmintic agent against Haemonchus contortus, with an effective level of 15%.
