The pekarangan is an open green space that reflects the interaction between ecological, social, economic, and cultural aspects. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of pekarangan based on the Dayak, Kutai, and Javanese ethnic groups in Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan. The methods used in this study were purposive sampling through field surveys, direct measurements, observations, and structured interviews. The analysis was conducted using the Ecological Pekarangan Approach (EPA), which includes pekarangan size, spatial zoning (front, side, back), and vertical and horizontal diversity of pekarangan vegetation. The results showed that the pekarangan of the Dayak community in Ritan Baru Village were generally small to medium in size, with a dominance of annual plants and local plant species that reflected traditional agroforestry patterns. Meanwhile, the pekarangan of the Kutai ethnic group in Kahala Village tend to be medium in size and are used for fruit, medicinal, and ornamental plants with a flexible spatial pattern. Javanese pekarangan in Sumber Sari Village are relatively much larger, with clear zoning and high diversity of horticultural and medicinal plants. The differences in pekarangan characteristics indicate the influence of culture, historical background of settlement, and adaptation strategies to the environment. The EPA approach has proven effective in revealing the structure and function of local community pekarangan.
