Climate change and global food security challenges highlight the need to strength the utilization and conservation of agrobiodiversity, particularly local food crop varieties. Mulu Bebe Banana is a local banana variety with important economic and cultural value for communities in West Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province, Indonesia. However, empirical evidence on the factors influencing farmers’ decisions to sustain the cultivation of this variety remains limited, especially from a socio-cultural perspective. This study aims to analyze the influence of economic and socio-cultural factors on farmers’ decision-making regarding the cultivation of Mulu Bebe Banana in East Sahu District. The study employed a mixed methods approach with an explanatory sequential design. Exploratory quantitative analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression based on survey data from 109 banana farmers, followed by in-depth interviews and field observations to contextualize the quantitative findings. Economic factors examined included income, capital, and land size, while socio-cultural factors encompassed farming experience as well as inherited traditions and farming practices. The results show that economic factors play a relatively limited role in farmers’ decisions. In contrast, farming traditions and practices transmitted across generations emerge as the dominant determinants in sustaining Mulu Bebe banana cultivation. Qualitative findings indicate that this local banana variety is perceived as part of cultural identity and local livelihood systems, leading farmers’ to make decisions beyond short-term economic considerations. This study emphasizes that farmers’ decision-making in traditional agricultural systems is context-dependent and embedded in socio-cultural values. Suggesting that agrobiodiversity conservation and agricultural development policies should adopt culturally sensitive approaches to ensure long-term sustainability.
