Sustainable tourism is often viewed as an effective tool for enhancing the well-being of local communities. However, both in research and practice, tourism development tends to prioritize the sustainability of the tourism industry rather than focusing on the sustainability of local livelihoods. Addressing this issue, this research analyzes a case of livelihood sustainability in the Prailiu community, East Sumba, Indonesia. Drawing on the sustainable livelihoods framework, the research examines the extent to which local actors are able to maintain their livelihoods over time. Utilizing a qualitative approach based on interviews and observations, this research explores the challenges and livelihood strategies of five weaving artisans in sustaining their tourism-based livelihoods. The findings indicate that the community leverages their social capital to address challenges and maintain their tourism-based livelihoods. Although the Prailiu community demonstrates relative resilience in sustaining their livelihoods, their high dependence on tourism makes them vulnerable to the frequent disruptions characteristic of the tourism industry.
