Formulation and evaluation of a body scrub preparation combining seagrass Cymodocea rotundata extract with white glutinous rice

Body scrub cream is a cosmetic product that is generally used as an exfoliating agent to clean dead skin cells. This study aimed to determine the formulation and physical evaluation of the best body scrub preparation derived from seagrass extract C. rotundata with white glutinous rice. Seagrass was extracted with 70% ethanol solvent and formulated into preparations with concentrations of 0% (F0), 2% (F1), 3% (F2), and 4% (F3). Evaluations were conducted on various physical parameters, including homogeneity test, pH, emulsion type, spreadability, adhesion, cycling test, and antioxidant activity using the DPPH method. The results showed that the body scrub preparation was not homogeneous due to the addition of white glutinous rice, which functioned as an exfoliating agent; the pH values in all formulations were safe and in accordance with standards; had an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion type; and had good adhesion and spreadability values for topical preparations. The body scrub formulation also exhibited antioxidant activity, with IC50 values of 187.06±0.05 ppm (F1), 184.19±0.01 ppm (F2), and 183.78±0.04 ppm (F3). Based on the test results, formulation F3 (4% extract) was the best body scrub formulation
