Abstract

The growth of Banda Aceh City has driven the expansion of built-up areas into surrounding regions, resulting in the formation of peri-urban zones within the administrative jurisdiction of Aceh Besar Regency. This development has generated strong spatial interdependencies between the peri-urban areas and the urban core, particularly through the routine mobility of the working population. This study aims to identify the distribution patterns of worker movements residing in six peri-urban districts of Banda Aceh, namely Baitussalam, Darul Imarah, Darussalam, Ingin Jaya, Krueng Barona Jaya, and Peukan Bada. The research employs a quantitative approach. Movement distribution was analyzed using an Origin–Destination (OD) Matrix to identify the frequency of weekly movements from origin zones to destination zones. The movement patterns exhibit polycentric characteristics with significant spatial heterogeneity across zones. Syiah Kuala District emerges as the dominant destination (376 trips), functioning as a major center of education and urban services. Analysis of internal peri-urban movements reveals that 86.6% (597 trips) constitute internal movements, with intrazonal dominance. These findings indicate varying levels of functional autonomy among zones, where districts such as Baitussalam demonstrate high self-sufficiency, while Ingin Jaya functions as a connector zone with a strong external orientation. The dominance of movements toward the urban core reinforces the functional dependence of peri-urban areas on the city for employment opportunities. Thus, there is a need for differentiated transportation planning based on zonal characteristics, the development of an integrated public transportation system, and cross-administrative planning coordination to support sustainable mobility in the peri-urban region.
