Revealing the Attitude of Tanwirul Afkar Magazine in Responding to BEM UI's Criticism of Jokowi: Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis

In June 2021, Twitter's social media was shocked by harsh criticisms by the University of Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM UI) against President Jokowi. This study aims to reveal the attitude developed by Tanwirul Afkar magazine in response to BEM UI's criticism of Jokowi. The data in this study are in the form of words, phrases, clauses, sentences or paragraphs in the form of responses related to BEM UI's criticism of Jokowi in the September 2021 edition of Tanwirul Afkar (TA) magazine. The method used is a qualitative descriptive method using Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis model. which includes text analysis, discourse practice, and socio-cultural practice. The results of this study indicate: (1) based on text analysis there is a neutral attitude of TA which forms a negative image towards both parties, namely BEM UI and Jokowi, (2) analysis of discourse practice is centered on the selection of sources and the selection of issues presented then viewed from an Islamic perspective. , this is because TA magazine is a medium published in Islamic boarding schools so that Islamic ideology is more highlighted, (3) the analysis of socio-cultural practice is based on three contexts, namely situational, institutional, and social.
