Communication Strategy in the Resistance Movement toward Komodo Island Relocation and Closure Issues
Abstract
Komodo National Park (KNP) as a conservation area and a strategic national tourism area involves various actors/stakeholders with different roles and interests in its management. Communication analysis is important to create conditions of mutual understanding, so that KNP management can benefit to all parties. In 2019, the Governor of East Nusa Tenggara discussed the relocation of the community and the closure of Komodo Island, which caused tension in relations with various parties. This study aims to analyze the community's communication strategy in the resistance of relocation and closure of Komodo Island issues. This study uses qualitative methods through in-depth interviews, analysis of events and the SPEAKING Hymes method. The results of this study indicate that there are differences in stakeholder groups based on the level of influence and importance, as follows: crowd, context setter, subject and key player. This study also shows that the communication strategy carried out by the community with other stakeholders is mostly dialogical as a form of advocacy. The communication events analyzed show that the community is able to achieve its interests, but it requires enormous efforts and the mobilization of all the collective strengths of the community.
