CRediT — Contributor Roles Taxonomy

Contributor Roles Taxonomy

Journal of Soil Science and Environment encourages authors to use the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) to provide a transparent description of individual contributions to a manuscript.

CRediT is a standardized taxonomy designed to identify the specific contributions made by each author to a research project and its resulting publication. The use of CRediT improves transparency regarding authorship, recognizes diverse forms of scholarly contribution, and helps prevent ambiguity concerning individual author responsibilities.

The CRediT statement does not determine who qualifies for authorship. Authorship eligibility is governed by the journal's Authorship Policy. Contributors who do not meet the journal's authorship criteria should be appropriately acknowledged rather than listed as authors.

CRediT Contributor Roles

Authors may be assigned one or more of the following contributor roles:

Contributor Role Description
Conceptualization Ideas; formulation or evolution of overarching research goals and aims.
Methodology Development or design of methodology; creation of models or protocols.
Software Programming, software development; designing computer programs; implementation of computer code and supporting algorithms; testing of existing code components.
Validation Verification of the overall reproducibility of results, experiments, and other research outputs.
Formal Analysis Application of statistical, mathematical, computational, or other formal techniques to analyze or synthesize research data.
Investigation Conducting the research process, including performing experiments, fieldwork, sampling, surveys, or data collection.
Resources Provision of research materials, datasets, laboratory facilities, field sites, instruments, or other resources.
Data Curation Management activities to annotate, clean, maintain, and organize research data for initial use and subsequent reuse.
Writing – Original Draft Preparation, creation, and/or presentation of the published work, particularly the initial drafting of the manuscript.
Writing – Review & Editing Critical review, commentary, revision, and editing of the manuscript.
Visualization Preparation, creation, and/or presentation of the published work through visualization, including figures, maps, diagrams, tables, or other visual outputs.
Supervision Oversight and leadership responsibility for the research activity, including mentorship and supervision of the research team.
Project Administration Management and coordination responsibility for the research activity and publication process.
Funding Acquisition Acquisition of financial support for the research leading to the publication.

Author Contribution Statement

Authors are encouraged to provide a CRediT statement during manuscript submission. The statement should accurately describe the actual contributions of each author.

A CRediT statement may be presented in the following format:

Author Contributions:
A.B.: Conceptualization, Methodology, Investigation, Writing – Original Draft.
C.D.: Formal Analysis, Data Curation, Visualization, Writing – Review & Editing.
E.F.: Supervision, Project Administration, Funding Acquisition, Writing – Review & Editing.

The contribution statement should reflect actual contributions and should not be used to assign honorary authorship.

Multiple Contributors

More than one author may be assigned to the same contributor role. Similarly, one author may contribute to several roles.

For example:

Conceptualization: A.B., C.D.
Methodology: A.B., C.D., E.F.
Investigation: A.B., E.F.
Formal Analysis: C.D.
Visualization: A.B., C.D.
Writing – Original Draft: A.B.
Writing – Review & Editing: A.B., C.D., E.F.
Supervision: E.F.

Changes in Contributor Roles

If author contributions change during manuscript revision, the CRediT statement should be updated accordingly.

Any substantive change in authorship or author contribution should be communicated to the editorial office and must comply with the journal's Authorship Policy.

Accountability

The CRediT statement does not replace individual responsibility for the integrity of the research.

All authors are collectively responsible for the overall integrity of the work and should be able to identify which aspects of the research they contributed to and which co-authors are responsible for specific components.

Authors should cooperate with the journal in addressing questions concerning research methods, data, analysis, interpretation, authorship, or other aspects of the published work.

Transparency

Journal of Soil Science and Environment uses CRediT to promote transparency, accountability, and recognition of the diverse contributions involved in scholarly research.

The journal encourages authors to provide complete and accurate contribution information at the time of submission and to ensure that the published contribution statement remains consistent with the actual contributions of all authors.
